“How can tradition relate to us here and now?”
In Roots Hz, tradition is not a preserved relic of the past, but a “living relationship”—one that continues to breathe through contemporary bodies and sounds, resonating with us in the present.
The three artists engage in a dialogue on the “use of tradition,” moving beyond the boundaries of their respective media—body, instrument, and voice. Roots Hz takes the “Dialogue Performance,” proposed by choreographer Cha Jinyeop, as its formal framework.
Choreographer Cha Jinyeop acts as a mediator through movements that pose questions, while geomungo player Shim Eun-yong and vocalist Kwon Song-hee respond through their respective practices, engaging in processes of profound deconstruction and expansion. Together, they develop a refined Triangular Dialogue that organically connects their approaches around a shared inquiry into the “use of tradition.”
Cha Jinyeop focuses on the “democracy of the body,” dismantling hierarchical structures embedded within tradition. By positioning the body as a medium of relation, she creates a field in which different rhythms can resonate with one another.
Through silence, resonance, and lingering sound, Shim Eun-yong explores “the resonance that remains after sound,” extending the reverberations of tradition into an inward process of reflection.
Kwon Song-hee and guest artist Jung Jung-yeop bring pansori into dialogue with the Buchla analog synthesizer. Their collaboration creates a hybrid field in which the communal qualities of folk song, the narrative structure of pansori, and the textures of electronic music intersect. As human breath encounters electronic vibration, the work explores new sensory layers in which technology and tradition coexist.
